Wojo—How I Got Recruited to Duke

“I remember seeing Coach Krzyzewski at my games the summer before my high school senior year. When he walks into a gym, he carries such a big presence. It’s a special thing. I kind of fell into being a high-major player the summer before my senior year. I thought I’d end up at the Ivy League But I went to the FIve-Star Camp and ended up getting MVP. There was one extra spot at the camp, and it was a spot on a team with nine Russians. None of them spoke English. We had a great week. I went from being recruited by Penn and Princeton to Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest. I wasn’t very tall, not jet-quick or a great shooter. But I was a leader. Coach K was asking his assistant Mike Brey: ‘Is this kid good enough?’ And Coach K always tells this story, that Mike Brey told him, ‘If he can lead nine Russians, he can lead anyone.’
