Meet Suzy Merchant--A Coaching & Leadership Journal Subscriber

The level of success is undeniable. Suzy Merchant is the head coach of the Michigan State women’s basketball program and she has proven to be one of the best coaches in Michigan State history as well as in the Big Ten Conference. Through her first eight seasons, Merchant has brought the Spartan program to the upper echelon at the Big Ten and national level. The Spartans have finished third or better in the Big Ten in seven of the last eight seasons, and her conference record of 89-47 (65.4%) is the 10th-best career winning percentage in the 32-year history of the Big Ten and is the second-highest percentage among active coaches. The Spartans have won at least 20 games in eight of her nine seasons.

She is a Great Lakes State native and was hired at MSU on April 30, 2007, after spending time as a head coach at Eastern Michigan (1998-07) and Saginaw Valley State (1995-98). In her 20+ years as a head coach, she has won more than 64-percent of her games,
